Disaster Risk Management and Meteorological experts from the Indian Ocean region gathered in Hyderabad, India, for the Tsunami Evacuation Maps, Plans and Procedure (TEMPP) and the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) training workshop. The workshop took place from Tuesday 15th to Friday 23rd April 2025.
Map Development and Regional Preparedness 💡 🗺️
The training focused on boosting tsunami preparedness and the safety of coastal communities within the Indian Ocean region by equipping participants with detailed evacuation map development skills based on their countries geography and methods to effectively implement tsunami readiness plans. For Seychelles the pilot area chosen was the Anse Royale district, as it was greatly affected during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Outcomes & Way Forward 🎯
With this new knowledge obtained Seychelles will begin updating its district evacuation plans and improving community awareness as we strive for a resilient future. As these efforts are part of our goal as DRMD to ensure all coastal areas Tsunami Ready by 2030.

Representing Seychelles were Ms. Catherina Bonnelame, International and National Coordinator of DRMD, and Ms. Doreen Ikula, from the Seychelles Meteorological Authority (SMA). The training workshop organisers were the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (NCOIS), the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOOcean).
